How Many Shades Should I Expect?

Monday, January 28th, 2008

Depends on what type of tooth whitening you are using. Is it strips, trays, or laser whitening? Let’s look at all three and that should help you determine what’s the best fit for you.

Whitening strips are a very common source of tooth whitening these days thanks to Crest. You can pretty much buy them in any drug store, shopping center, or even online. If you are using the over the counter version you can expect a 1-2 shade difference. If you are using the dental professional crest whitestrips version, then you could see a 2-4 shade difference.

Whitening trays are also a very common source of teeth whitening. Normally you get this type of whitening through your dentist. Reason being you need a custom fit molded tray in order to use the syringe gel.

Even though a lot of people are coming to their dentists, which is perfectly fine and we recommend it:), their are teeth whitening kits now that include trays that you can custom form in the comfort of your own home. This has really exploded the convenience of home tooth whitening.

Usually with syringes you can get a stronger strength of whitening gel than with strips so naturally you usually will see a higher shade difference. You can expect to see a 4-6 shade difference using
this form of whitening. That’ pretty darn good!

Laser tooth whitening, or also known as one-hour tooth whitening, is also very common, but can only be done at the dental office. Usually people who want immediate results, or are in sales, or just really busy generally get this type of whitening done. Brides and grooms also consider this the quickest way to whiten that smile before the big day.

Although this is by far the most expensive type of whitening, it’s also the quickest and best out of the three as well. With the strips or whitening trays you have to wait a week or two before you see the results you are looking for. With laser tooth whitening, you walk out of the dental office with your pearly white teeth. Using laser whitening you can usually expect to see a 5-10 shade difference in one-hour. That is huge!

With all of that said, you have to take into consideration how white or not white your teeth are before you whiten. If you have pretty stained teeth, then you will see greater results then someone
with pretty white teeth to begin with. So use this guide as just that, a guide. Your results will very depending on your own situation.
